Sacramento authorities are probing a shooting incident that occurred Saturday evening at Howe Park in Sacramento at the time officers were shutting down an unsanctioned gathering of a crowd of several hundred.
Background
Sacramento County law enforcement initially got calls about the Howe Community Park shooting 2026 park on Howe Avenue around 6:30 in the evening after obtaining information of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Following that, additional information came in mentioning a potential altercation occurring inside the park.
A law enforcement helicopter searched from above but reported no active disturbance. Even so, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had gathered without authorization in an unauthorized manner.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Deputies moved to clear the area by setting up around the park's perimeter and making announcements directing the hundreds present to leave immediately. Around 15 minutes were allotted for the gathering to break up.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that upwards of 20 gunshots rang out. The barrage of gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Officers swiftly started locating gunshot victims.
Four People Shot
In total, four victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. All four — made up of one woman and three men ranging in age through their in their 20s at the time of the incident — were rushed to local Sacramento hospitals. Emergency physicians noted that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one suffered minor injuries. Fortunately, all four were in stable condition.
Sacramento Metro Fire assisted at the location and assisted with medical triage the injured before they were taken to the hospital.
What Investigators Found
The bulk of the shooting was confirmed to have happened along the Cottage Way corridor next to the Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Detectives discovered additional shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Ballistic damage were observed in the iron perimeter fence bordering the Home Depot. The physical evidence indicated that at least one shooter had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area targeting the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was put under lockdown while the scene was active. CSI units alongside detectives stayed at the location through the early morning hours.
Suspects Detained
Intelligence received via scanner audio revealed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was pulled over in Solano County California. Four individuals were held for questioning. Law enforcement units were heading to pick up the four detainees to return them to Sacramento for processing in Sacramento County. Footage analyzed by investigators established that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
